New pregnancy yoga course June July August 2019

Hello beautiful pregnant women!

Looking forward to welcoming you to pre natal yoga course starting 25th June at Canoe Lake Pavilion (7.45pm – 8.45pm). In the meantime there are a few things I highly recommend you start thinking about/ doing in preparation for birth whatever stage you are at.

Firstly try to find 5 minutes everyday for meditation or breathing. If this seems very alien to you, don’t worry over the course we will work on it. I recommend finding guided meditation on YouTube here is one I liked during pregnancy.

Secondly try to get out everyday for a walk- yes every day. Walking is unrivalled in its fat burning, strengthening legs and pelvic floor and gentle cardio.

Thirdly start doing your pelvic floor exercises. This is crucial for an easier time pushing during 2 stage labour and for quicker recovery afterwards. I recommend this app: KPFE it times your squeezes and releases and the free version reminds you to do it once a day. You should be doing it 2-3 times a day in order to seriously strengthen your pelvic floor.

Finally, I hope your partner is giving you lots of rest time. Make sure you start to slow down a little. Pregnant women are strong and should continue to exercise to be healthy and well but allow your partner to do the cooking / cleaning / sorting out the bills. Right now you are doing the most important job of growing new life and it can be exhausting. Give yourself credit for this and allow yourself more relaxation time than you have before. Also extra cuddles and kisses from your partner to get the oxytocin flowing is always welcome (we will talk more about oxytocin on the course).

Looking forward to sharing more information and practicing yoga with you from June. In the meantime take care, rest and eat well and DO YOUR PELVIC FLOORS!!!

Learning self-love

What does self love mean?

Although it sounds like a fluffy self development term, self love is all about giving yourself some credit, cutting out self-sabotage and championing yourself more. It’s about having more time for yourself; doing things that nourish your soul and make you feel great. It is not ego or self-importance, it is about self compassion!

Have regard for your own happiness and wellbeing. Learn to self love.

What are you grateful for?

At this time of year when we are focussed on self improvement and resolutions, I’m encouraging my students to look into what they are already great at. What in their wider lives and day to day are they thankful for?

Fall to rise

Yes, sometimes we fall. In life. At work. At home. Figuratively and literally.

Yoga has taught me that no matter what challenges you face, and whatever life throws at you, you have to pick yourself up again. In the immortal words of Aaliyah, dust yourself off and try again.

How can you achieve “better wellbeing”?

“Wellbeing creation” not “wealth creation”

How can we actually achieve better wellbeing? Today a report was published following research on the ‘key to happiness’. The research, conducted by London School of Economics, identified mental health and relationships as the main drivers of happiness. The report identified that the government needs to play a part in young people’s wellbeing; highlighting the need for the state to champion “wellbeing creation” rather than “wealth creation”.

Inspirational Wellbeing Warriors

Emma G, The Ironman

This is the first in a series of Inspirational Wellbeing Warriors; people who grab life by the horns and achieve amazing things. First in the series is Emma, a mum, a wife and an Ironman.

At 8:22pm on Sunday 11th September 2016, Emma crosses the finish line having swum 2.4 miles, cycled 112 miles and run 26.2 miles. In the same moment she becomes the third fastest female in her age category (45-49) to complete Ironman Weymouth.

10 days after she completed her first Ironman, I sat with Emma.

Yoga for wellbeing

yoga near me

To me, a healthy body is synonymous with a healthy mind. Some people find their happy place through running, some find it baking (Val in GBBO anyone?!) and over the years, I have found it in my yoga practice.

Yoga has been a good friend to me. Like many other young females, anxiety can sometimes get the better of me, and yoga is my method of grounding myself. It’s a personal practice, without competition, without pretence, it’s just you, your mat and your body. This is what I love about yoga, You are the master of your mind, You are focussing your energy solely on your pranayama (breath) and drishti (gaze). You are listening to your body and focussing the mind.

Walking for wellbeing

Well, this is my introductory post as The Wellbeing Warrior, and so I’ll start where the whole idea of this blog began.

Around two years ago, a bundle of chocolate joy bounced into our lives. Lucy our delightful and very loving Chocolate Labrador has become a very important pooch, and our house is a healthier place for her. This is because, not only does she offer unconditional love, she is also a guarantee that you will get outside for at least two decent walks a day. This is not to detract from how wonderful Lucy her-hoochie-self is, but as it has been widely covered in the world’s media, dogs are a natural antidepressant.
